Onam The No: 1 Festival Of Kerala

Onam:- The Sate Festival Of Kerala
Onam - the state festival of Kerala - is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The festive season of Onam, which falls on the Malayalam month of Chingam, every year (between August and September), is a ten-day carnival for the Malayalees all over the state, country and abroad. Being a harvest festival, it is time to thank God for the bountiful yield. According to the stories in Hindu epics, Mahabali, the legendary King of Kerala, visits the state every year during the Onam festival, to ensure the wellbeing of the people. He is welcomed to his kingdom with reverence. The festival is all about relishing on the grand Onasadya (traditional feast of Onam), shopping, family reunion and welcoming King Mahabali by spreading good cheer.
A number of rituals are performed during the ten days of Onam, which starts on the Attam nakshatram of Chingam. Rituals such as Maveli Puja, Onathallu, Onakazhcha are rooted in the ancient legends and are followed in many parts of the state, since a long time. Apart from the rituals, enthralling games are played during the ten days, wherein small children, men and women take part with equal enthusiasm. Games such as 'Thumbi Thullal (folk dance performed by women), Kaikotti Kali, Pulikkali form a prominent part of the celebrations of Onam. In addition to this, sporting events such as Uthratadhi Vallamkali (snake boat race) are organized with zeal.
Onasadya is an inevitable part of Onam festival. Thiruvonam is the important day of Onam, wherein the lavish feast is organized. Lip-smacking recipes are prepared by the women in every Malayalee household. Intricate designs of 'rangolis' (with colored rice paste) and 'pookkalam' (with flowers) in front of the homes. There is a tradition of bestowing Onakkodi (new clothes especially purchased for Onam) upon the younger members of family by the elder ones. All the traditions and rituals of Onam attract thousands of tourists from across the country and the world, to Kerala, during the festival of Onam.

Date Of Onam:

Onam games,Wishes

Onam is one of the most important festivals of Kerala and it is celebrated with immense joy and fervor all over the state by people of all communities. It is said that Onam is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit the state of Kerala at the time of Onam. As this festival falls during the fortnight of the Malayalam New Year, it is welcomed with a special enthusiasm and zest. The celebration goes on for ten days and the tenth day of the festival called Thiruvonam is celebrated with grand traditional cuisines, beautiful dances and classic music and Onakalikal – the traditional Onam games.
After the gala Onam feast, wonderful Kathakali dance performances, socializing and exchanging warm wishes, Onam celebrations are marked with lots of indoor and outdoor traditional sports and activities to indulge in, collectively known as 'Onakalikal'. Besides the usual games of chess, dice or cards, played by the old people there are football matches, personal combats, archery and boxing for the young and more energetic. These games add to the enthusiasm and vibrancy of the festival. People of all age groups participate in the festivals and enjoy the festivities.
Traditional Onam Games
Ball Games
PantukaliThe most popular outdoor game is Pantukali in which the ball is prepared by tying a few pebbles in the layers of dried-up plantain leaves with the help of a plantain or coconut fiber. The players are divided into two groups and a stick called 'natta' is planted at one end of the court. The court is basically an open space with lines drawn at to indicate the limit beyond which the ball should not be thrown. One party serves the ball and tries to hit the stick while others try to catch it. If the ball is caught then the man is out otherwise he gets another chance.
Combats
KayyankaliCombats are usually of two kinds - those that are undertaken singly known as Kayyankali. It is a violent game and has all the risks of an ancient duel. However no weapons or horses are allowed. In this game there is a display of power. The participants fight one to one. This game is basically the display of power. There are fights, wounds, blood and even death at times.
AttakalamAttakalam is another kind of combat which is comparatively less hazardous in nature compared to the Kayyankali. In this the game is not played individually rather the players are made to play into groups. A large circle is drawn on the plain sand floor and one group is placed inside the circle. A member of the second group tries to bring the former outside the circle and both are free to use force. However, once any member of the inside team steps of the circle, he is considered out. After all the members of a team are dragged out, the other team takes its position inside the circle. If a member of any team cannot be driven out, his party is declared victorious.
AmbeyyalAmbeyyal is actually the game of ‘archery’. In this game, two groups of young men shoot blunted arrows at each other. It is a game to test the patience, skill and persistence of the players. However, since the arrows are strong and are delivered with force, they still manage to hurt many. The bows are made of about 18-inch long bamboo. There is a mark in the form of a little stick called 'cheppu' and those who hit this mark are allowed to carry all the arrows lying on the ground for their team.
KutukutuPopularly known as Kabbaddi in rest of India, Kutukutu is a simple group game. In this game, there are two teams with eight players each. It is played in a rectangular court which is divided into two halves, one for each team. One man from one group advances from the middle line towards the opponent's area uttering 'Kutu Kutu' in one continuous breath and try to touch the opponents and run back to the central line without being caught. However, if he is physically caught and is out of breath before touching the central line, he is out of the game. by orkutyy.blogspot.com

Legends Of Onam

വാമനന്‍ , മഹാബലി

Onam - the festival of harvest - is celebrated with high spirits and enthusiasm in Kerala and the Malayalees all over the world. The air is filled with festivity, which starts from Attam (the first day of the festival) and lasts until the culmination of the festival. Many days prior to the festival, the people indulge themselves in preparations for welcoming their Maharaja Mahabali, who, according to a legend, visits them every year on the occasion of Onam, to enquire about their wellbeing. Apart from the legend of Mahabali, a number of stories are connected to the harvest festival. In this article, we have given information on Onam legends.
Legends Of Onam Festival
Return Of Mahabali       by         orkutty.blogspot.com
Once upon a time, there lived a benevolent and mighty Asura (demon) king Mahabali, the grandson of Prahlada. Mahabali was the ruler of Kerala. His people were happy to have him as the king and there was no sorrow, poverty, disease or premature death in his kingdom. Afraid of his rising popularity, the ever-jealous gods approached Lord Vishnu, with a request to put an end to his rule. Counting on his charitable nature, Vishnu disguised himself as a Brahmin dwarf called 'Vamana' and sought three steps of land from Mahabali. However, Vishnu then increased his size to cosmic proportions and covered the entire earth in one step and the entire heaven in the second. When he asked Mahabali, where to place his third step, he humbly offered his head to the divine deity. Pleased with his virtues, Vishnu made him the king of hell and granted a boon to him that he could visit his kingdom once a year. Thus, Onam is celebrated to welcome the legendary king returning annually to his earthly abode and kingdom.
Boat Palliodam
Once when some men were sailing on a boat called 'Palliodam', which was laden with food, it got stuck in the narrow turning of the river. The head oarsmen called Bhattathiripad set out to seek help from the hut near the river. However, when he reached there, he found a poor widow and her children weeping because of hunger and poverty. The kind-hearted man took some food from his boat and gave it to them. As soon as it was done, the boat could be easily maneuvered to the main course of river again. Since that day, it has become a tradition to feed a poor person at least on the day of Onam.
Vanishing Boy  by    orkutty.blogspot.com
Once upon a time, the head of Katoor Mana, the Nambuditi Brahmin family, was bathing on the near Aranmulla in river Pampa. After offering prayers to the Gods, he was waiting for a poor man to feed, to complete his religious duties. While waiting, he started praying to Lord Krishna. After some time, he saw a poor boy in rags standing before him. The Brahmin lovingly gave him a bath, dressed him and fed him well. However, it is said that the boy disappeared after eating and could be found nowhere. He spotted the boy near the Aranmulla Temple, just to lose him again. Brahmin concluded the boy to be the God himself and since then, Nambudiri Brahmins offer food to the deity in Aranmulla Temple on Onam, every year.

STEP #2
 Save your template.

STEP #3
Now whenever you want to add this image-zoom effect to your images, simply add the class "jqzoom" to your a href tag.

So, if this is the usual code you use to display an image in your blog:

<a href="DIRECT_LINK_TO_THE_LARGER_IMAGE" title="IMAGE_TITLE"><img src="DIRECT_LINK_TO_THE_SMALLER_IMAGE"/></a>
Now to implement the hack, the new code becomes:

<a href="DIRECT_LINK_TO_THE_LARGER_IMAGE" class="jqzoom" title="IMAGE_TITLE"><img src="DIRECT_LINK_TO_THE_SMALLER_IMAGE"/></a>
In the DEMO, this is the larger image used while this one is the thumb-nail.

NOTE #1: To display the images with Reverse Opacity Effect (second image in the DEMO), add class="jqzoom2" instead of class="jqzoom"
NOTE #2 (IMPORTANT): For this hack, you should have two sizes of the same image. The smaller image is displayed in the blog, and the larger image is hyperlinked to the smaller image (displayed in the floating window).
You may use any image-editor (MS-Paint/Adobe photoshop) to create the smaller thumbnail-image (displayed it in the blog posts).

Stoner cruises to Czech MotoGP win, widens lead

Casey Stoner

BRNO ( Czech Republic): Australian Casey Stoner won the Czech motorcycling Grand Prix in Brno on Sunday, extending his lead in the MotoGP championship following his success at the US Grand Prix last month.
Italian Andrea Dovizioso came in second and his compatriot Marco Simoncelli finished third, his first podium finish in MotoGP, completing a clean sweep for Honda.
Stoner took an early lead and built up a 6.532 second advantage by the time he crossed the finish line, leaving champion Jorge Lorenzo and the rest of the field to scramble for the second position.
Lorenzo, last year's winner in Brno, finished in fourth spot followed by fellow Yamaha rider Ben Spies of the United States.
It was Stoner's sixth triumph in this season's 11 races so far. Stoner leads the championship with 218 points, 32 ahead of Lorenzo.
Spaniard Dani Pedrosa, who started from pole position, crashed over the front end at a right curve early on, a blow to his chances of challenging in this year's championship.

Thousands march in Prague gay parade

Thousands marched in Prague Saturday at the climax of the first gay pride festival in the Czech capital, defying a fine drizzle and counter-demonstrations by conservative groups. With many in fancy dress, blowing whistles and waving flags they gathered in the centre of the city before setting off along the main avenues to the sound of music from loudspeakers mounted on vans.
Attracting participants from other parts of Europe as well as the Czech Republic, the parade was to end on an island in the Vltava river for a series of concerts and shows.
Some 300 police were on duty to prevent the sort of clashes that marred a gay march in Brno, the country's second city, in 2008.
The five-day festival, which began Wednesday, sparked controversy long before it started as a top aide to conservative President Vaclav Klaus labelled gays as deviants.
Petr Hajek, Klaus's deputy chancellor famous for rejecting Darwinism and for calling Osama bin Laden "media fiction," slammed Prague mayor Bohuslav Svoboda for granting support to the festival of "deviant fellow citizens."
Klaus then backed Hajek, saying the parade was a manifestation of "homosexualism," not homosexuality, and that he perceived "deviant" as a "neutral word in terms of value."
This prompted a joint statement from the ambassadors of Austria, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States, who voiced support for the festival.
Klaus termed the statement an "unprecedented step", while Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg called the spat "unfortunate."
"It is counter-productive and unnecessary to express support for rights which no one in the Czech Republic denies," he said in a statement.
Gay Czech former tennis star Martina Navratilova criticised Klaus in a message to the parade Saturday for his "extremely homophobic and unenlightened remarks."
"Unfortunately it seems President Klaus just doesn't get it," she said, adding, "Come on Mr. President, join the parade and see what we are all about."
The head of the organising committee, Czeslaw Walek, told AFP, "We are quite surprised by this politicising ... We just wanted to have a carnival parade."
The festival offered about 80 events at over 30 locations in and near Prague, including concerts, films, seminars, exhibitions and parties.
Young Christian Democrats, an anti-abortion movement and the far-right DSSS called counter-demonstrations Saturday in support of traditional and family values.

While we cannot process your travel visa request, travelers should take note of the following advice:

  • Check the current validity of your passport

For international travel, all travelers will need a passport, valid for at least 90 days following your departure date. However, we strongly recommend traveling with six months validity on your passport at all times.

It is also recommended that your valid passport have at least two un-used pages remaining, for any necessary entry and exit stamps that may be issued. It is also a good idea to review the number of pages and validity remaining your passport well in advance of overseas travel. This will allow for time needed if a replacement passport may be required.
